2010 03 26 Xinjiang
A potpourri of Xinjiang
This is a mix collection of photos taken during my last year trip to Xinjiang, mostly in the northern part. We probably have chosen the worst time to be there as Xinjiang is caught in the most violence of ethnic clashes between the majority muslim local and the Han Chinese.
Xinjiang as I recalled from my last trip some years ago is a beautiful place with spectacular landscapes, in many places unspoilt and still not too commercialized. With a rich history and colourful culture it's definitely a place where travelers will not be disappointed regardless of whether you are tracing the once famous silk road of Marco Polo, or walking thru the places that made famous of the legend of ¡°Monkey goes West¡±.
As in most trips the weather plays an important part to my photography. There are days the weather was so gloomy that I get restless. When it rained for a few days, when it sky is just pale and white, when the rain made the dirt road so muddy our bus got stuck, when we have to detour due to road block¡when we arrived minutes after the sun set you feel like kicking the fellow who was late and caused the delay¡

2010 03 18 Nikon D300s
Painting Bangkok Red

When I book a trip to Bangkok last month I didn¡¯t know that the Red Shirts will be holding a public rally to protest against the ruling Thai government. The last time the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts had a confrontation the Bkk airport was closed for a week forcing me to cancel my trip.

And this time I am in the city right in the middle of all these happenings. Despite what you see in the newspaper and TV news the city is actually almost the same as usual. The rally is confined to a certain area only and doesn¡¯t effect the rest of the city, in fact I was trying to see where there are but traveling around the main shopping area I failed to see any.
The malls are still open, weekend market at Chaktuchat is still packed and the bars are still open, thank goodness¡

Since this is a leisure trip I took along only the Nikon D300s with a 18-200 and a 50mm lens. I didn¡¯t even take along a tripod and camera bag. All the shots here are taken handheld including the nighttime skyline shot of Bkk city from the 64th floor sky bar in Siroco.  Some were taken in bars in Silom where its very dark and I have to use ISO 1600. The shot of sky was taken from inside the plane just minutes before it gets too dark.

2010 03 03 Thien Hou Temple during CNY
Raise the red lanterns
Thien Hou Temple in KL is also another popular place during the Chinese New Year.  Usually the road leading up the hill where it is located will be jammed pack with cars snaking up the narrow road. I have been the previous Chinese new year and this year I though going on the eve evening will be less congested as most people will be having their reunion dinner at that time.
But I am surprised to see so many photographers there this year, including many Malays photographers too. Many were there waiting for the lantern to be lighted up just after sunset but somehow this evening is a little too late. While the lantern in the center of the temple is lighted up the rest at the roof areas is still not switch on and by the time it's switch on the sky has already turned dark. Not the most ideal at all.
